A Swedish woman has died swimming with dolphins off Kaikoura this morning.
Police are investigating the death, along with OSH inspectors.
Constable Dean Schroder understood the Swedish tourist was in the water some time between 9am and 10am.
“The tourism operator’s staff and ambulance staff attempted to assist her but she died once she got to [Kaikoura] hospital,” he said.
A post mortem is being conducted, but early results show that she drowned.
According to the police, the death is not being treated as suspicious and has been referred to the coroner. It was possible that the tourist had a pre-existing condition she was unaware of.
The Dolphin Encounters website advises that “although snorkeling experience is not a requirement, we remind you that this is an open water experience where a variety of sea conditions can be encountered.”
The owners of Dolphin Encounters are conducting an emergency meeting and are expected to release more details this afternoon.
