Lufthansa to receive 4th Airbus A380

Lufthansa’s fourth A380 (registration D-AIMD, “Mike Delta”) will be ferried from the Airbus plant in Hamburg-Finkenwerder to Frankfurt this evening, as scheduled.

Lufthansa’s fourth A380 (registration D-AIMD, “Mike Delta”) will be ferried from the Airbus plant in Hamburg-Finkenwerder to Frankfurt this evening, as scheduled. The aircraft has been named after the Japanese capital, Tokyo, the first destination to be served by the Lufthansa flagship. The official naming ceremony for the aircraft will be held in Japan at the beginning of
2011 to mark the 50th anniversary of Lufthansa¹s first flight from Frankfurt to Tokyo.

The latest A380 to join the Lufthansa fleet is due to enter scheduled service on November 18, 2010. To date, the three A380s already in operation, which have completed more than 1,000 take-offs and landings and clocked up more than 3,600 flight hours, have proved to be a reliable aircraft type and popular among Lufthansa customers.

Today’s delivery of the airline’s fourth A380 means that from November 18 – as planned – Lufthansa will be able to operate ten further flights with an A380, replacing the previous Boeing 747 and Airbus A340 services on these routes. In the future, the A380 will operate three flights a week (previously one flight) on the Frankfurt-Beijing route. Furthermore it will serve Johannesburg five times a week (previously twice weekly) from Frankfurt.

Counting the existing daily A380 service between Frankfurt and Tokyo, the A380 – Lufthansa’s largest passenger aircraft – will then take off for its three routes some 30 times a week.
