HANOI, Vietnam — Vietnam Airlenie’s official announced Sunday that the carrier will launch a second direct route to Yangon next week.

AFP reports that Vietnam’s national flag carrier will fly between the southern business centre of Ho Chi Minh City and Myanmar’s southern trade hub from Monday, said spokesman Le Hoang Dung without providing further details.

There will be three flights a week between the two destinations, according to a previous VNA statement.

According to AFP, in March, VNA began flying from Hanoi to Yangon four times a week and there are plans to increase that to five soon, the statement said.

State-owned Vietnam Airlines – a member of the SkyTeam airline alliance that includes Air France and America’s Delta Airlines – has set out to become one of southeast Asia’s leading carriers.

It aims to transport 12 million passengers this year and boost its fleet from 70 to 115 aircraft by 2015.
