BANGKOK (eTN) – Continuous rains and storms have forced Samui airport to close since around 7:30 am this morning, according to Bangkok Airways’ communication team. Bangkok Airways is Samui airport’s largest user with over 20 flights per day. According to a spokespersom at Bangkok Airways’ communication department, only two flights have been able to fly from Bangkok to Samui this morning – the first one around 8:00 am, and the second one around 12:00 noon. The airline is still confident that the situation will improve by this afternoon and still plans to operate 12 flights to Bangkok out of the island. The airport was already closed yesterday afternoon until the early evening due to the rain and poor visibility.

Other airports in the region continue to operate normally. According to Suriyapa Bunnag, vice president of communications for Nok Air, both Surat thani and Nakhon Si Tammarat airports remain opened. However, the ferry link from Nakhon Si Tammarat to Samui Island has been suspended for the time being. Hat Yai airport is also operating normally despite flooding around the airport.

Most train services to the south have been suspended or cut short. State Railways SRT has announced it will transport rail passengers by bus to their final destination from Thung Song, a district located in Nakhon Si Thammarat province.
