American Airlines spent $1.47M to lobby Congress and executive-branch agencies

WASHINGTON – American Airlines spent $1.47 million lobbying the federal government in the second quarter. The spending was down from $1.6 million in the first quarter but up from $1.43 million in the second quarter of 2009.

According to the Associated Press, the carrier lobbied on the Airline Passengers Bill of Rights, which would require airlines to plan for providing food and medical attention for passengers stuck in long tarmac delays. Similar rules have already been imposed by the U.S. Transportation Department.

American also lobbied on bills to prevent outsourcing of aviation jobs, prohibit pilots from using personal laptops during flights, require more information about flights when airlines sell tickets, and standardize rules covering carry-on bags.

Besides Congress, American lobbied the Federal Aviation Administration, the Transportation Security Administration and the Homeland Security Department.
