Seychelles to attend historic signing of new Kenyan constitution

VICTORIA, Mahe – Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean-Paul Adam, represented President James Alix Michel and the Seychelles government at the official signing ceremony of the new Kenyan constitution in Nairobi this past Friday.

Following a referendum held earlier this month, the people of Kenya elected to approve a new constitution, supported by President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga, which will effectively transform the political landscape of Kenya by clarifying the separation of powers, making politicians more accountable, and enshrining the concept of devolution, among other things. This symbolic signing, to which leaders of the East End African region have been invited to witness, is seen to mark a new era for Kenyan politics.

“Kenya’s bold embrace of political reform is a shining example for all of Africa and the world and one which we are proud to witness,” said President Michel in a congratulatory letter sent to the Kenyan president upon hearing the results of the referendum.

“It is always an honor to be able to participate in such a historical and special event,” said Minister Adam, “Such progressive political restructuring is never an easy undertaking, which is why we must rejoice in these accomplishments when they present themselves.”

“Kenya is an important neighbor for Seychelles, and now more than ever, when we’re seeking to collectively address challenging regional threats and further integrate ourselves for the benefit of all, we hail such momentous achievements. Seychelles has itself led by example in the process of drafting and adopting its own progressive constitution in 1993 and has always been happy to share its experiences,” added the Minister.

Minister Adam just returned from Mbabane, Swaziland, for the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) 28th Policy Organs meetings and the 14th Heads of State and Government Summit from which he journeyed onto Kenya.
