A bus rollover claimed the life of a Vietnamese man and seriously injured two others after a sightseeing trip to Victoria’s Great Ocean Road yesterday.

Police believe the bus driver lost control and crossed to the wrong side of Tomahawk Creek Road at Irrewillipe, near Colac.

The bus then rolled onto its side before coming to rest several metres off the road in a culvert.

The coach was carrying up to 26 international tourists, who were visiting the Great Ocean Road and Twelve Apostles.

One of the passengers, believed to be a man in his mid-40s from Vietnam, died at the scene.

An 18-year-old girl and a middle-aged man were flown to The Alfred hospital. They both remain in stable conditions.

Investigators said it was lucky more people weren’t seriously injured in the crash, which happened on a rain-slicked, two-lane stretch of road.

The remaining 23 passengers were taken to Colac Hospital for treatment.

Police say the driver, a man in his 40s from Melbourne, is assisting them with their investigation.

“Police have been told that those travelling on the bus were international tourists headed for the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles,” a police spokesman said.

The death was one of four on Victorian Roads over the weekend.

Late yesterday, a man in his 20s died after slamming into a pole in Canterbury Road, Heathmont about 7pm.

About 6pm Saturday evening, a 57-year-old woman truck driver died when her vehicle hit a four-wheel drive on Mitchell Drive, Wodonga.

Early Saturday, an 18-year-old Ballarat man driving his Subaru station wagon near Gatum, north of Hamilton in the state’s west, veered off to the right and struck a tree. Police said the car burst into flames following the impact and the man died at the scene.

The state’s road toll sits at 204, 18 more than at the same time last year.
