Agoda celebrates English summer festivals

SINGAPORE – Agoda, Asia’s global hotel booking site and part of Nasdaq-listed, today announces some great summer rates for hotels in London, just in time to catch some of the season’s best festivals.

The English summer time is when the UK’s biggest festivals take place. Making the most of the mild summer weather, there’s a different event almost every week, from large-scale music festivals like Glastonbury, to the family-friendly music and arts weekender, Camp Bestival.

England boasts one of the most vibrant art scenes in the world, and while it’s a great year-round destination, summer really showcases London at its best. The warmer weather puts Londoners in high spirits, and visitors get to enjoy a great range of music and theater, with the festival program stretching well into September.

Widely considered to be London’s best festival is the Notting Hill Carnival. Held since 1966, this is the second-largest street festival in the world, filling the streets of Notting Hill with Caribbean color and sound for two full days. Each year, the event features hundreds of Caribbean food stalls, a flamboyant parade, and a special children’s day where costume prizes are awarded. This year the carnival will take place on Sunday, August 29 and Monday, August 30, with more than 1 million people expected to attend.

For a more classic taste of British culture and tradition, travelers can head to another of London’s major events, the Thames Festival. Held on September 11 and 12, this festival celebrates a great London icon – the River Thames – with live concerts, dance, games, children’s events, and arts and science exhibitions. Program events happen along the waterfront from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge. A group “jive” dancing session and closing fireworks are two event highlights.

On a completely different tangent, travelers interested in the British royal family and sustainability can indulge these twin obsessions at “A Garden Party to Make a Difference.” This event is part of the Prince Charles “Start” initiative, a national campaign to inspire UK residents to lead more sustainable lives. A Garden Party takes place from September 8-19 in the gardens of Clarence House – where Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall currently reside – and in the gardens of neighboring Marlborough House and Lancaster House.

A Garden Party will feature music and comedy plus fun activities for families and children. The musical program will be curated by Jools Holland, with many British icons involved in the event, including Dame Vivienne Westwood for fashion, and Clive Anderson for debating.
