In a statement released Monday, July 12, the UN secretary general has strongly condemned the bombings that struck the Ugandan capital on Sunday, killing dozens of people and wounding hundreds at two sites as they were watching the final match of the football World Cup.

Al-Shabaab, a Somali-based militant group, has reportedly said it carried out the attacks in Kampala, which have claimed over 70 lives among Ugandans and other nationalities.

Mr. Ban hopes that the perpetrators of these acts will be brought to justice and prosecuted, UN said in the statement.

The UN secretary general extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and the Government of Uganda, as well as his wishes for a full and speedy recovery to the injured.

Meanwhile, it is being reported that US President Barack Obama called Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Monday as well to expressed his condolences. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters President Obama called the Ugandan president to “express his sincere condolences for the loss of life and offered to provide any support or assistance.”

According to Gibbs, Obama told Museveni that the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) would assist in investigating the bombings. The two leaders during the call have also “reaffirmed their commitment to combat terrorism.
