Tanzania hotel rating reveals deficiencies

The ongoing exercise to grade and rate hotels in Tanzania has stunned some industry observers. Figures sent in from a source in Dar es Salaam indicate that only two-thirds of the over 200 hotels and resorts captured in the exercise so far have met the required and anticipated standards, while the remaining one-third left many open questions for the evaluation teams visiting the properties.

For those owners whose properties are deemed unacceptable, property standards must be improved or else risk losing out in the star rating or possibly even shutting down, if serious problems persist. A formal appeals body has been launched so that if owners of hotels and resorts feel they were not given a fair assessment by the inspectors, they may make an appeal.

The new authority that measures tourist appeal will soon be grading and rating upcountry areas where safari lodges and tented camps will be visited and assessed.
