Chandigarh – Eighteen persons were on Saturday injured, two of them seriously, when a train rammed into a bus at a manned crossing in Haryana’s Jhajjar district.

The tourist bus was negotiating the railway tracks at the crossing near Barai village in Bahadurgarh when it was hit by the Avadh Assam Express, Jhajjar Superintendent of Police Shrikant Jadhav told PTI.

Asked how the gate was open when a train was approaching, Jadhav said the gateman claimed he got the signal to open the gate.

“It was a private tourist bus from Rajasthan. The driver was trying to steer his vehicle clear as a truck was also crossing the tracks from the opposite direction but somehow it got stuck and could not move.

The driver saw the train approaching and the passengers jumped out of the bus in panic. However, being a sleeper bus, some of them were sleeping on berths and caught unaware, resulting in injuries to them,” Jadhav told PTI.

Two passengers who were were seriously injured in the accident were referred to PGIMS at Rohtak, he said.

Asked whether it was the gateman’s fault, Jadhav said, “Whether there was any negligence on the gateman’s part will be established only by a inquiry by the Railway authorities.”
