Mahanathee Magazine in Thailand is looking at the upcoming celebrations of Chiang Rai’s 750th anniversary in 2012. Founded by King Meng Rai in 1262 along the southern bank of the Mae Kok River, Thailand’s northernmost provincial town
has a myriad of tourist attractions and gains importance as an important
tourist destination because of the North-South Economic Corridor passing by.
The still missing link of R3A on the Bangkok-Kunming route will be a bridge
built over the Mekong River at Chiang Khong District. The construction of
the bridge, sponsored by China, will be completed in September 2012.

There are other projects in line such as the plan to build a railway from
Denchai District in Phrae Province to Chiang Rai and to continue via Laos to
China. Also, there is the huge Chiang Khong Estate Project to establish an
industrial city processing gemstones and electronics among other products
for export. Last not least, a new ship port project is taking shape at
Chiang Saen District, because the old port near the ancient walled city is
becoming too small for more cargo ships arriving from China.

Another ambitious project will be the establishment of Route R3B in 2010,
which will connect Chiang Rai via Mae Sai District to Kyaingtong in the
Eastern Shan State of Myanmar to continue to China. Also, from Kyaingtong it
will soon be possible on a still politically insecure highway and crossing
the Salween River to reach the markets of Taunggyi, Naypyidaw, and Mandalay.
In the not so distant future, trade opportunities then will increase
substantially.

Finally, Chiang Rai should be changed in a way to become the “Golden City of
Lan Na Culture, Center of International Commerce and the Wellbeing of the
people.” What will happen then to Chiang Mai, I wonder?
