Two Koreas joint-tourism talks fail

The inter-Korean working-level talks on two joint-tourism projects ended Monday with no significant progress made as the North refused to agree to Seoul’s long-standing demands.

The inter-Korean working-level talks on two joint-tourism projects ended Monday with no significant progress made as the North refused to agree to Seoul’s long-standing demands.

Seoul reiterated the need for a set of safety measures and a pledge by Pyeongyang to ensure the protection of visitors while calling for Seoul officials to be allowed to investigate the site where a South Korean tourist was fatally shot in July 2008.

The communist state on the other hand reportedly argued that its own probe has already given an account of the incident and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il previously discussed safety issues with the chief of South Korea’s Hyundai Group. Hyun Jung-eun.

The Unification Ministry says further talks are expected but when and where the follow-up dialogue could take place has yet to be revealed.
