TUNIS – Tourism earnings in Tunisia fell almost 40 percent year-on-year in the first nine months of 2011, hit by unrest which led to the ouster of former leader Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, the ministry said Wednesday.
Revenue dropped 39.4 percent drop to 1.5 billion dinars (780 million euros) while the number of visitors fell 35.4 percent from about 5.2 million between January and the end of September in 2010 to 3.3 million this year.
The number of overnight stays dropped 43.2 percent.
Last year a total of 6.9 tourists visited Tunisia. Tourism accounted for seven percent of Gross Domestic Product in 2010 and supported some 400,000 jobs.
