US citizens have special Saturday application hours with Passport Day

WASHINGTON, DC – Quite a bit of media attention is in full tilt for the US State Department’s scheduled “Passport Day,” to be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011. Originally scheduled for April, that date was cancelled at the last minute due to the threat of a government shutdown.

At Passport Day, customers throughout the country will be able to apply for a passport at a regional service center with specially-expanded hours during this unique weekend opening. Traditionally, passport offices are open to customer applications on weekdays only, typically posing a challenge to people who work a Monday through Friday, nine-to-five job.

On the 17th, US citizens may apply for a passport with a “standard” processing time of 4-6 weeks, or for an “expedited” processing time of 2-3 weeks. Fees will vary depending on whether the applicant is adult or minor and whether applicants would like a passport only, a passport card, or both.

Many citizens will appreciate the benefits of this day as a special service and will welcome the chance to check “passport” off their to-do list. However, as a one-day-only event, people with small children, who live quite rurally, or who need a passport immediately, may seek application alternatives.

Consumers have several options in addition to standard processing hours and Passport Day. Passports may also be obtained year-round by mail via the US Passport Agency, or consumers may wish to outsource the task to a private passport service. Customers who require a passport on a quick turnaround, who would like some guidance in replacing a lost or stolen passport, or who need to obtain a second valid passport, may all find a specialized service helpful.

“We work very closely with the US Passport Agency with completing all of our customers’ orders precisely and efficiently, and we’re very pleased to support awareness of Passport Day,” said Dean Orbell, Vice President of Washington, DC-based Travel Document Systems, Inc., “For customers who’d like a helping hand to guide them through applications, who require rush service, or would prefer to free up their weekend time for other activities, we can assist customers in fulfilling all of their passport needs year-round.”
