At 8:20 pm last night, February 19, 2019, a group of armed delinquents broke into the hotel gift shop at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica in Puerto Maldonado in Peru.

With the help of a video surveillance system and the speedy action of the hotel staff, the intrusion was detected immediately. The resident manager, Percy Ccopa, and his team brought all of the 53 guests to a secure location, ensuring their isolation from the assailants.

Tragically, one of the leading Explorer Guides, Elรญas Leรณn, who has worked with the company for more than a decade, lost his life during the break-in.

“We are heartbroken by this incident,” observed Jose Koechlin, founder and Chairman of Inkaterra, “and we are in close contact with his family to provide support.”

After giving statements to the police, all hotel guests were escorted to their cabins by the local police and the surveillance team was engaged to guard the property.

“Please be assured that all necessary security measures have been taken to guarantee the safety and well-being of our current and future clients,” Koechlin continued, “and we are being assisted by the local authorities who are actively collaborating with us.”
