Italian Responsible Travel Award

ITALY – With the UNESCO Cities and Sites World Tourism Expo, “We want to promote slow, emotional, and sustainable travel to create a heritage of memories and a passport to peace, and the TRI award focuses on the combination of sustainability, culture, and tourism,” said Claudio Ricci, Mayor of Assisi, President of the UNESCO World Heritage Cities and Sites Italian Association, and founder of the WTE – World Tourism Expo, the first UNESCO Heritage travel fair. The exhibition will be held in Assisi, the ancient town of Saint Francis, from September 16-18, 2011.

What is responsible travel?
Responsible travel is about effective sustainability planning in the travel industry, reducing the negative impact to the environment, and enhancing cultural heritage and maximizing social and economic benefits for the local community.

A responsible traveler wants more out of his/her travels and looks for deeper and more real experiences, values authenticity, and is interested in local people’s traditions, cultures, and rituals. Responsible travel criteria can be applied to any kind of product or market, from adventure travel to luxury beach holidays.

The Italian Responsible Travel Award was founded by L’Agenzia di
Viaggi, the Italian travel trade newspaper, to identify and promote responsible travel products and businesses committed to its growth – all over the world – to Italian travel agents and travelers.

The award is sponsored by ENIT (the Italian government Tourist Board), FIAVET (Italian Federation of Associations Travel & Tourism Companies), and UFTAA (United Federation of Travel Agents’ Associations). The official ceremony will be held in Assisi on September 17, 2011, in partnership with the World Tourism Expo for Unesco Sites and Cities.

Only tour operators, travel agencies, hotels and hospitality, public-private tourism organizations can apply for the award, and must submit a complete travel package, itinerary, or destination; tourism organizations and boards may submit special projects.
