Tourists booked to California may want to think twice before leaving. The air quality is so dangerous that even the government-run https://airnow.gov/ warning site collapsed due to web-traffic. The response when checking current air quality is: Sorry, But This Web Page Does Not Exist.

Firefighters are true heroes in California trying to get fires under control, dozens of people are dead, but a slower threat of death may already be in progress due to air pollution.

This may be a time when authorities are worried about creating panic and may be doing too little to inform locals and visitors. Tourists should avoid Los Angeles and San Francisco – this may be a simple alert message US Tourism authorities are not broadcasting to the world.

United Airlines warned passengers booked to SFO or LAX today and suggested to rebook due to air quality and to expect delays.

Tourists in Los Angeles told eTN: The air quality is crazy bad here! Studio City/Los Angeles is 360, and where the fire is in Malibu/Calabasas it’s 2250! And yet I haven’t seen anyone else wearing a mask.

A tourist in San Francisco said: Just arrived in San Francisco for the week and wooowwwwww, the air quality is spectacularly terrible here. I even knew to expect it, but it’s still a bit shocking.

The Air Quality Index in Los Angeles and San Francisco has been fluctuating between unhealthy to hazardous:

150-200: Unhealthy: Everyone may begin to experience health effects; members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects. Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should avoid prolonged outdoor exertion; everyone else, especially children, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion.

201-300: Health warnings of emergency conditions. The entire population is more likely to be affected. Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should avoid all outdoor exertion; everyone else, especially children, should limit outdoor exertion.

301 and higher: Hazardous: Health alert: everyone may experience more serious health effects. Everyone should avoid all outdoor exertion.
