This month, the International & Hotel and Restaurant Association became an official participant of the United Nations Global Compact.
The UN Global Compact is policy initiative for businesses that are committed to the principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. The ten principles of the UN Global Compact are as follows.

Principle 1: support and respect the protection of internationally-proclaimed human rights; and
Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
Principle 3: uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor;
Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labor; and
Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
Principle 7: support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
Principle 10: work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
The private sector is a driving force in globalization. By adhering to these principles, businesses participating in the UN Global Compact “can help ensure that markets, commerce, technology, and finance advance in ways that benefit economies and societies everywhere.”
IH&RA’s core principles align well with the UN Global Compact: ending child exploitation in tourism and the hotel industry, promoting sustainable tourism in order to effectively reduce negative environmental impacts of climate change, preserving the surrounding culture and heritage of a region, advocating an international standardization for hotels and restaurants, and supporting an industry that creates millions of job opportunities.
