The United States government has issued a travel warning and security alert for American citizens in Zimbabwe.

Starting tomorrow on August 22, the Constitutional Court in Zimbabwe will begin hearing the election challenge filed by the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). The government and police are anticipating and preparing for an upsurge in already occurring violence due to civil unrest and increased political tension. Because of this, the United States government has issued a travel warning and security alert for American citizens.

For US citizens visiting Zimbabwe, the government is advising to have a communication plan with family and friends, so they will know when they can expect to hear from you. Travelers are urged to monitor the local news and stay abreast of the situation and be on alert for what is going on around them to secure their safety. If possible, the government is also recommending having extra food, water, and medications on hand.

According to the police, security is of utmost importance in the Harare Commercial Business District area especially, but throughout the entire country as well, as the situation is extremely volatile.

Because of this, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has issued an order to seal off roads on August 22 and 23, 2018 from 0600 hours to 1800 hours at the following locations:

ยท Sam Nujoma-Selous-Simon Muzenda

ยท Sam Nujoma-Samora Machel-Simon Muzenda

ยท Sam Nujoma-Kwame Nkrumah-Simon Muzenda

ยท Sam Nujoma-Nelson Mandela-Simon Muzenda
