The Mayan storytelling dances were a truly sensational opening to the World Travel Awards held Monday night on the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

American Airlines, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts and Mexicana were amongst travel brands who triumphed during the World Travel Awards North and Central America regional ceremony, which was staged at the new, luxurious Hacienda Tres Rios in Mexico on 21 September.

The awards, described by the Wall Street Journal as the ‘Oscars’ of the global travel and tourism industry, unveiled who are the ‘best of the best’ in the region.

In the North American categories, American Airlines won the title North America’s Leading Airline. Meanwhile Fairmont Hotels & Resorts bagged four awards including Canada’s Leading Golf Resort, Canada’s Leading Ski Resort, Canada’s Leading Business Hotel and North America’s Leading Golf Resort. The Leading Hotel Brand for North America went to Marriott Hotels & Resorts, and North America’s Leading Destination went to Miami.

In the Central America categories, Mexicana reigned as Central America’s Leading Airline, while Parador Boutique Resort & Spa picked up Central America’s Leading Hotel award. Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau were recognized as Central America’s Leading Destination.

Jumerirah Essex House claimed the title of  North America’s Leading Business Hotel, with Anthony Travel taking Leading North American Travel Agency and GAIA Hotel & Reserve earning  Mexico + Central America’s Leading Green Hotel.
Further afield, Sadie Cove Widerness Lodge in Alaska was also a World Travel Awards winner.

eTurbo News had the pleasure of presenting the Central America’s Leading Destination and congratulate Cancun for a remarkable show of strength to forge forward even during challenging times.  Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula and Riveria Maya are all truly back, stronger than ever.

One of the stars of the evening was the cuisine of the new Hacienda Tres Rios, which will clearly set this new resort apart from its competition.  Guests at the gala event enjoyed an eight course meal that encompassed local and international flavors.  No overcooked chicken at this event.  The host resort should be extremely proud of the well orchestrated courses that raised the foodie bar quite a few notches, so much so, local Executive Chefs should be taking notes.
