Costa Crociere launches first ship designed specifically for Chinese tourists
Costa Crociere celebrated the launch of Costa Venezia, the company’s first ship designed and built specifically for Chinese tourists at Fincantieri, Monfalcone, shipyard plant based in North Italy.
“As the first ship created specifically for the Chinese market, Costa Venezia marks a new era not only for Costa and Fincantieri, but for the Chinese cruise industry as a whole,” said Mario Zanetti, General Manager of Costa Group Asia.
“From its conception until the technical launch of today and beyond, everything that regards Costa Venezia was designed to suite the Chinese customer’s taste.”
During the ceremony, Costa Venezia touched the sea for the first time. The celebration followed the protocol provided by the maritime tradition for these occasions, with the flooding of the basin, following the cutting of the ribbon for the rupture of the bottle by the godmother, Chiara Ustulin, an employee of the construction site of Monfalcone.
Costa Venezia will enter service in March 2019 once the interior fittings have been completed. It will revive the uniqueness of Venetian and Italian culture to Chinese tourists.
The ship’s theater has been inspired by the “La Fenice,” the historical Venetian opera house; the main hall will reminds of “Piazza San Marco,” and the restaurants will reflect the typical architecture of the streets and the Venetian fields.
Onboard there will also be real gondolas, made by the artisans of the Squero di San Trovaso, (a city artisans district), while an enchanting costume party will recreate the magical atmosphere of the famous Venice Carnival.
Before arriving in China next May, Costa Venezia will sail for 2 cruises, both departing from the Italian port of Trieste. March 3, 2019 will start the vernissage cruise in Greece and Croatia, followed on March 8 by a 53-day inaugural cruise in the footsteps of Marco Polo, which will cross the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Asia Oriental, before arriving in Tokyo.

The vernissage and the inaugural cruise will be the only departures available for European and American guests to enjoy a vacation on the new ship. From May 18, 2019, in fact, Costa Venezia will be dedicated exclusively to Chinese tourists, offering cruises in Asia starting from Shanghai.
A second ship designed exclusively for the Chinese market, twin of Costa Venezia, is currently under construction by Fincantieri in Marghera, with delivery scheduled for 2020.
