Las Vegas McCarren Airport terminal plunged into darkness
A power outage at McCarren International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, today, June 13, 2018, caused delays at checkpoints and to ticketing and gate operations, as well as backlogs at baggage collection areas, the airport said.
The power outage lasted about an hour and affected Terminal 1 and a few concourses.
Vegas is known for its lights – the neon alone is world famous on the strip. So, having an expectation that NV Energy is reliable is a given, and rightly so. It has one of the highest reliability rates in the country.
But when power goes out at an airport, this means computers and all electrical equipment goes down, too, not to mention, baggage carousels, escalators, and, of course, lights. This brings everything to grinding halt until power can be restored.
According to a spokesperson for NV Energy, an underground power cable failed. Power was restored about an hour later at approximately 10 a.m., but the delays and other effects trickled down and last for several hours.
