Cameroon’s new airline Camairco to buy Boeing jets

YAOUNDE – Cameroon’s new airline Camairco, which will replace collapsed firm Cameroon Airlines, intends to buy Boeing aircraft, the central African country’s transport minister said late on Monday.

The new airline may be operational within three months, a senior Camairco official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Earlier this year, the government said it had raised $125 million to buy three planes.

“Our defunct national air transport company Cameroon Airlines always worked closely with Boeing and we would want this to continue,” transport minister Bello Bouba Maigari said after a team from the American firm had visited the capital.

“All our pilots have been trained (in) Boeing technologies as well as our maintenance staff,” he said.

Cameroon is looking for an external partner to buy a majority stake in Camairco.

In March, a Cameroonian high court charged the former administrator of Cameroon Airlines with embezzling almost $250 million.

Boeing, which sells most of its aircraft in the United States and China, said on Tuesday it expected the global aviation market to recover in 2011.
