Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who is better known in Tanzania as the owner of the popular English Premier league Club Chelsea, is in the country for a visit that is a vote of confidence in the country’s tourism sector.

No wonder then his arrival on Wednesday has stirred the north of the country, which is home to some of the best tourist attractions in the world. During his 10-day tour, Mr. Abramovich will attempt to scale Mount Kilimanjaro.

Roman Abramovich is one of the wealthiest people in the world. During his stay, the international spotlight will certainly be on Tanzania, and that’s good news for tourism.

What better marketer would the country need than the Russian billionaire, whose word of mouth, after he savors the tourist attractions, should boost high-end visitors? It is hoped that fellow members of his billionaires’ club, associates, family, and acquaintances will come to Tanzania as well.

Tanzanian tour companies must step up efforts to attract more high-end visitors like him and many others who have come and gone without much publicity.

As initiatives are drawn up to attract more visitors from afar, Tanzanians need to visit their own tourist attractions. The lovely scenery and historic artifacts are largely left to be enjoyed by others.
