Maltese cruise ship, German cargo ship collide in Danube channel

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia — Slovak officials say a cruise ship with more than 100 tourists on board has collided with a German cargo ship in a Danube River channel, south of the capital of Slovakia.

No injuries have been reported.

According to the Associated Press, fire department spokesman Ivan Petko says the collision occurred early Wednesday south of Bratislava. He says a German cargo ship carrying corn was badly damaged and is sinking. Five crew members escaped unharmed.

Petko says the passengers from the Maltese cruise ship, which was only slightly damaged, are being evacuated. He said the captain was confident the ship could reach the port in Bratislava.

More details were not immediately available. The cause of the collision is being investigated.
