To provide organizers with a good idea of the actual energy consumption of an event, Amsterdam RAI and the Greenbalance Group – a supplier of carbon footprint calculations, energy reduction, and carbon offsetting – have developed the Event Carbon Calculator. By means of this online calculator, organizers can easily calculate the carbon emission of the event, all by themselves. The Carbon Calculator takes several energy-consuming components into account like the energy-use during the event itself, but also the use of the (international) transport of the visitors and overnight stays.

The event can be made carbon neutral by offsetting all the energy used. Carbon offsetting can be effected by using Carbon Credits, which originate from renewable energy projects, mostly in developing countries. By purchasing Carbon Credits, renewable energy projects are stimulated and the organizers of the events can position themselves as environmentally conscious to the visitors.

The first organizer who will make their conference carbon neutral is the Aids Fund, STOP AIDS NOW! and Soa Aids Netherlands. They organize the National Congress Soa*Hiv*Seks being held in Amsterdam RAI on December 1, 2009.
