More protection for Zambia tourists

The Livingstone Tourism Association and the Ministry of Tourism, Environment, and Natural Resources yesterday launched the tourism police after training personnel in protection of tourists. Seventeen officers from the Zambia Police and Zambia Wildlife Authority (Zawa) completed the customer service excellence workshop at David Livingstone Safari and Spar.

Livingstone Tourism Association chairman, Kingsley Lilamono, said tourism was not a very old concept in Zambia as an economic sector, and it was important to maximize the benefits it offers to the nation.

Mr. Lilamono said tourism could bring many benefits and change the national economy if stakeholders cooperated and worked together through understanding. He said the tourism policy, which comprised eight and nine officers from Zambia Police and Zawa respectively, should be able to provide the tourists with sufficient information and protection during their holidays in Livingstone.

He said some tourists did not understand some traffic rules in Zambia because they did not apply where they came from, hence the need to orient them properly as opposed to harassing them on the pretext of applying the law.

He said the Livingstone Tourism Association would remain available to consultations from the tourism police on issues they did not understand during the implementation of the concept to avoid mishandling tourists.

And Support to Economic Expansion and Diversification (SEED) coordinator, Edna Eufemio, expressed confidence that tourism would improve with the launch of the tourism police because tourists would receive more protection.

“I hope you will be more efficient not only by ensuring security for the tourists, but also providing information to them on the sector in the country,” she said.

Zawa area warden, Stephen Malungo, said he was delighted with the participants and encouraged them to work hard as their work was enormous.
