Alamo ripped as over-rated ‘tourist trap’

SAN ANTONIO – Remember the Alamo? Andrew Harper is encouraging tourists to forget it.

SAN ANTONIO – Remember the Alamo? Andrew Harper is encouraging tourists to forget it.

Harper, Yahoo travel writer listed the San Antonio landmark among the country’s most overrated tourist attractions. In a three-sentence explanation, Harper offers a brief description of the Alamo, and notes much of its original structure has deteriorated and what’s left is “a few small stone buildings and some neatly trimmed lawns.”

News of Harper’s review drew puzzled expressions from Alamo visitors Saturday afternoon.

“I think the Alamo’s great,” said Kim Jensen, who was visiting from Idaho. “It’s not over-rated.”

A symbol of Texas Liberty, the Alamo draws close to 2.5 million visitors every year. For some, it’s a quick tour or just a nice place to take a picture, but for Texans visiting from other parts of the state, it can mean a lot more than that.

“It just gives you a sense of history,” said Houston resident Lindi Kohn. “Where you’ve come from and the sacrifices people made so we can live like we do today.”

The Yahoo list is comprised of a total of eight locations around the country which Haper said left him “underwhelmed or exhaused for no good reason.” Along with the Alamo, Harper lists Wall Street, Hollywood, and Bourbon Street as “over-rated.”
