Now part of the Aqua group, the Hotel Wailea, formerly the Diamond Resort, promotes itself as “Maui’s only luxury boutique hotel.” Given the huge number of accommodations on Maui, call us nit pickers, but we aren’t entirely convinced this is accurate. It’s a pet peeve of ours that very tired cliches such as “boutique” and “luxury” are trotted out in hotel marketing materials. We would love to see a few resort/hotel ad campaigns that are able to resist the urge to put “luxury” and “boutique” in their positioning lines. Having said all that, we absolutely love the Hotel Wailea logo, it’s very retro and has a nice old Hawaii feel about it. So, let’s take a look at what this property can offer couples.

Perfect for a honeymoon, destination wedding, or simply a romantic trip for two, the Hotel Wailea with only 72 condo-style suites is very intimate when compared to other much larger (and much more expensive) Wailea properties. With rates a fraction of neighboring Wailea properties and each suite providing kitchen facilities, couples wanting to hold down the budget are not forced to eat every meal out, saving considerably over the duration of a honeymoon or destination wedding.

Speaking of food, despite it’s rather hokey name, Capische is the fine dining outlet at the Hotel Wailea. Of interest to couples holding a destination wedding here, is the II Teatro restaurant within a restaurant concept in a private room overlooking the garden. You will be assigned your own private chef and sommelier to prepare a multi-course tasting menu with wine pairings in a secluded setting, making it a wonderful venue for either a wedding reception, rehearsal dinner, or simply a romantic evening during a honeymoon. Foodies take note, Chef Chris Kulis is CIA alumni and has worked for Thomas Keller in Napa. We think this private dining experience is something not to missed when planning either a honeymoon or destination wedding at the Hotel Wailea.

Hotel Wailea guests have signing privileges at the Grand Wailea in addition to access to the Hotel Wailea’s private beach club reached by complimentary shuttle. All around, we recommend the Hotel Wailea for couples wanting a Maui honeymoon or destination wedding without the usual hefty Wailea price tag.

Tip: Be sure to inquire about the 99 days of summer rate of US$199 per night through September and special destination wedding room rates/packages.
