Would you like your weekend city break to include a live soundtrack? Make sure you’re in Vilnius on 19 May and find some music that will get your toes tapping at this year’s annual Street Music Day. Budding talents and established local bands of every style imaginable are already honing their skills to offer their best performances during hundreds of free open-air concerts slated to take place throughout the day.
Street Music Day has been celebrating the free spirit of music for 12 years now, and attracts crowds of devoted fans and more artists with every edition. Started in 2007 by renowned Lithuanian artist Andrius Mamontovas as a small initiative, the festival quickly spread to other cities and even to Lithuanian communities abroad, uniting over 5,000 participants.
The success of Street Music Day is its atmosphere of freedom. You can lose yourself listening to the performances or simply walk about and soak in the creative street life. Exploring the cobbled streets of Vilnius and its array of UNESCO World Heritage sites is a treat on its own, but the live music makes it that much more special.
If you don’t believe it, take a sad song, and make it better. Grab your drum – you might want to check the airline’s baggage policy – and join a Drum2gether jam on the streets of Vilnius. Or simply laze around in one of the many outdoor cafes and suck in the artistic atmosphere. Great Instagram Stories are guaranteed!
