Athens Airport was declared the overall winner in the third regional heat of the internationally accredited Routes Marketing Awards held in Prague earlier this week. The awards were presented at the gala dinner of the 4th Routes Europe.

There were four categories: Scandinavia & the Baltics, Western Europe, Mediterranean & Southern Europe and Central & Eastern Europe. Riga International Airport (Latvia) triumphed in Scandinavia & the Baltics. Brussels Airport (Belgium) was crowned winner of the Western Europe category. The Mediterranean & Southern Europe saw Athens International Airport (Greece) the winner, and Hamburg Airport (Germany) won the final category of Central & Eastern Europe.

As the overall winner for the entire Europe region Athens Airport will now be automatically entered into the shortlist for the Routes World Airport Marketing Awards, to be held at World Routes in Beijing from the 13th to the 15th of September 2009. There they will compete against winners from other regional Routes events: Routes Americas (Dallas/Fort Worth), Routes Asia (Christchurch) and Routes Africa (to be decided in Marrakech, 7-9th June).

Routes Marketing Awards are internationally accredited and deemed to be the most prestigious in the industry. This is because they are the only award based purely on rewarding excellence in route development and nominated only by airlines.
