The US Geological Survey reported that a big 6.9-magnitude earthquake has hit off the coast of the Papua New Guinea island of New Britain. This is the same area that last week’s big quake struck.
Papua New Guinea’s Highlands was hit by a 7.5-magnitude quake last month which claimed the lives of at least 125 people. It is estimated that there are 270,000 people that are still in urgent need of assistance and relief aid.
The quake’s epicenter is 156 kilometers south-southwest of Kokopo in the East New Britain province.
The US Geological Survey reported that tsunami waves of up to one meter are possible for the coastal areas of Papua New Guinea and up to 30 centimeters for coastal areas of the Solomon Islands.
