The Tourism Authority of Thailand issued the following updated fact sheet on the situation in their country that occurred due to anti-government protesters:

– The situation in Bangkok has greatly improved within the last 24 hours.

– The leaders of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) called off their anti-government protests around noon today. The protestors, including those at the main demonstration site around the Government House, have dispersed.

– Most of the shopping malls in Bangkok re-opened this afternoon.

– The BTS SkyTrain, subway services, public utilities, and communication services have continued to operate uninterrupted.

– Bus services on most routes and the train service to/from Bangkok have resumed.

– The following six roads and intersections are still being cleared of debris left by the protests and will be re-opened to traffic shortly โ€“
Din Daeng to the Victory Monument, Yommaraj, Uruphong, Sapan Panfah, roads around the Rama V Equestrian Statue, and Sutthisan Road around the Mitr Maitree intersection.

– With the exception of the above, all other roads in Bangkok are open to traffic and all other travel-related infrastructure and services, including all airports, train services throughout the country, and roadways, are operating as normal, and all other parts of Thailand are safe for travel and tourists can still visit other destinations and attractions.

– Hotels throughout the country are operating as normal.

– Under the emergency decree, the prohibition of public gatherings of more than five people in Bangkok is limited to political activities and acts, which may lead to unrest.

– The measure does not in any way apply to Songkran celebrations and festivities, the organization of local and international corporate meetings, incentive events, conventions, and exhibitions, or MICE. It is ‘business-as-usual’ for all MICE events hosted in Thailand.

– The kingdomโ€™s various tourist attractions and shopping districts are open for business as usual, and tourists and visitors can continue to enjoy the variety of sites, food, and experiences.

– The Emergency Decree is only a temporary measure and is expected to be lifted soon.

Political Situation

The state of emergency, announced by Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej on Tuesday (September 2, 2008), had been introduced to prevent further clashes between the anti- and pro-government protesters. The decree is a “temporary measure” applicable only in Bangkok and does not involve a curfew or any other measures restricting the movement of people around Bangkok or the Kingdom. The Emergency Decree may be rescinded earlier once the situation returns to normal.

In a recent survey conducted by Assumption University’s ABAC Poll of 532 foreign businessmen, investors and tourists during September 2-5, 59 percent viewed the ongoing political situation as not unusual and just part of the democratic process. As many as 97 percent of foreigners visiting Thailand said they would visit the country again if the turmoil ends. Source: The Bangkok Post, Sunday, September 7, 2008

Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkokโ€™s international airport) and all regional airports around Thailand are operating normally. Rail services in provincial areas of the north and northeastern regions are operating normally. Service has also resumed on most of the rail services to destinations in the south. (Call Center: 1690). Major surface routes between Bangkok and other parts of Thailand are unaffected. Travel to key destinations around Thailand, such as Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Northeastern Thailand (Isan) and other parts of the country remains unaffected.

The Peopleโ€™s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) anti-government rally is restricted to the designated protest site and the immediate areas. Tourists and expats in Bangkok are advised to avoid travelling to areas near the demonstration site, namely Government House and Ratchadamnoen Nok Road (Makkawan Bridge).

All other areas in Bangkok remain unaffected by the rally. There has been no significant disruption to life and business in the capital beyond added traffic congestion in a few areas. The vast majority of the city, including all the major tourist spots (including The Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun-Temple of Dawn, and Sanam Luang โ€” The Royal Ground), shopping centers and riverside attractions, as well as all roads and public/private transport systems are functioning normally. Bangkok’s city taxi and rail services are unaffected. All hotels and resorts in Bangkok and throughout Thailand are open for business as usual. Last night (September 10), the legendary jazz guitarist George Benson and the seven-time Grammy winning vocalist Al Jarreau performed to a full house of Thai and expat contemporary jazz fans during a live concert at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in the Thai capital.

For visitors planning trips to various sites around Rattanakosin Island (Koh Rattanakosin) in the historic heart of the capital, shuttle boats and river taxis continue to provide fast and convenient transportation to various public piers along the Chao Phraya River.

Despite the political impasse, 74 events supported by the Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) and scheduled to be hosted in Thailand for the remainder of 2008 are still confirmed. This demonstrates the resilience of the industry and the confidence that business visitors have in Thailand as a globally-preferred MICE destination. The Bureau also plans to invite organizers across all MICE sectors to visit Thailand and spend some time to see the real situation for themselves.
