Dresden’s coziest time of the year

No matter how much hustle and bustle there is in this big city, the people of Dresden love to make things cozy. And they are good at it, especially during those weeks before Christmas when things can never get cozy enough. Getting into the Christmas spirit, smelling the incense, meeting friends and doing things together. The city offers a lot of opportunities to do that and so much more, regardless of whether you are a native Dresdener or one of its many international tourists.

To get into that Christmas mood, what could be better than the Christmas exhibition in the Local History Museum Dresden “Mit Teddy durchs Dresdner Spielzeugland” (With a Teddy Bear Through Dresdenโ€™s World of Toys)? This trip promises to fulfill childhood dreams. Starting December 2, visitors can find out which toys used to be manufactured in Dresden and where people went to buy their toys – dolls, tin soldiers, racing cars, and what was once the largest toyshop in Germany. Dresden has always been a city that has made childrenโ€™s eyes sparkle.

Not just during Advent, but especially then, the cityโ€™s stages offer a rich selection of pieces for children and adults. Theatre tjg. theater junge generation, the cityโ€™s theatre for children and young adults which is located in Kraftwerk Mitte, is presenting a world premiere on November 25 – a new installment from the book series about the highly-gifted Rico and the less-than-gifted Oskar is being brought to the stage. “Rico, Oskar und das Vomhimmelhoch” tells a very special Christmas story and will be shown at various times during Advent.

The main stage of the Staatsschauspiel Theatre Dresden will be showing Cornelia Funkeโ€™s “The Thief Lord” starting on November 11. The Boulevardtheater Dresden, along with the Brothers Grimm, will be looking at the “Anfang aller Mรคrchen” (The beginning of all fairy tales). Tickets for these productions can be purchased at the respective theatres. Tickets for the “Christmas classics” at the Dresden State Operetta and the Semperoper Dresden have to be reserved far in advance. The Dresden State Operetta is showing Humperdinckโ€™s “Hรคnsel and Gretel,” while the opera is showing Tchaikovskyโ€™s “Nutcracker” ballet. If unable to get any more tickets for this season, try booking for performances during Advent 2018.

A real tradition is the Dresden Christmas Circus, happening this year for the 22nd time. From December 20 to January 7, guests can hear the ringmaster introduce “the greatest show on Earth” in Ostragehege. Artistry, trained animals, and clowns accompanied by big band sounds and culinary delights – the Christmas Circus is filled with unforgettable moments for young and old alike.

Not just a spectator, but an active participant? For those that like winter activities, then Dresdenโ€™s ice rinks are for them. For visitors who like sports, check out the EnergieVerbund Arena. Looking for something a bit more romantic? Then go to the rink in the inner courtyard of the Hotel Kempinski Taschenbergpalais Dresden (opens November 24). Nature lovers will glide over the ice at the Dresdner Winter at the concert venue WeiรŸer Hirsch, located at the edge of the Dresdner Heide (opens November 17).
