SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands – Saipan tourism officials are trying to lure Japanese airlines to fly there from Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport.

The once primarily domestic airport serving Japan’s capital is opening new slots for international flights.

No airline currently has plans to fly from Haneda to Saipan.

But Marianas Visitors Authority’s Michael Merner said Wednesday he’s continuing to approach Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways about operating the route.

The tourism agency is also talking to Japanese budget carrier Skymark about operating charter flights from Haneda.

JAL scrapped its 14 weekly flights between Saipan and Tokyo’s Narita International Airport in late 2005.
