MONTERREY, Mexico – As many as 11 American and Canadian tourists died along with their Mexican driver in a bus crash in northern Mexico, officials said on Tuesday.
The bus was carrying 23 American and Canadian tourists when a cargo truck swerved into its lane on Monday and slammed into it head on, said an official from the civil protection agency in the state of Coahuila where the crash occurred.
The official, who asked not to be named, said nine Americans and Canadians died on the scene of the crash, along with their driver. Another two of the foreign tourists died in a hospital, he said.
Seventeen more were injured, some of them in serious condition, the official said.
The bus, which had left from McAllen, Texas, was carrying tourists to the colonial mining town of Zacatecas in central Mexico.
The federal attorney general’s office confirmed in a statement that five Americans and four Canadians died at the scene of the crash, together with their Mexican driver.
