Today Air Azul announced new, nonstop flights to the New York and Baltimore-Washington DC area from Lansing, MI beginning June 2.

“We are extremely pleased to offer the Air Azul brand of low-fare, nonstop jet service to the Capital Region International Airport in Lansing,” said Brian Burling, vice president for Air Azul.

Air Azul will launch the new scheduled service from Capital Region International Airport in Lansing to Newark Liberty International Airport and Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport with three flights weekly. The flights will operate Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Air Azul will utilize a 162-seat, 737-800 series, New Generation, jet-aircraft on the route.

“We believe that Lansing customers will enjoy the added convenience and affordability of Air Azul’s flights to the New York and Washington DC area, and we look forward to serving their needs,” Burling added.

“We are really excited about the new Air Azul service,” said Robert Selig, executive director of the Capital Region Airport Authority. “Michigan travelers have always responded very positively to new air service offered from the Capital Region International Airport. This airport is aggressively continuing to recruit new air service to Lansing; passengers in this region and throughout the state will fill the airplanes if the right service is offered, and we always welcome low-fare air carriers that save our passengers millions of dollars flying from Lansing.”

The Capital Region International Airport recently completed nearly US$10 million in airport road and runway construction work that included lengthening the main runway to 8,500 feet to safely and efficiently accommodate large aircraft and heavy cargo planes. A new US$4.2 million United States Customs and Border Protection Federal Inspection Station is on schedule to open in May 2009 at the airport. The 14,000-square-foot facility will be able to process up to 200 international commercial airline passengers per hour.
