2 convicted in France on sex tourism charges

COLMAR, France – A French court has convicted two men for having sex with girls while traveling in southeast Asia and handed them the maximum penalty of seven years in prison.

COLMAR, France – A French court has convicted two men for having sex with girls while traveling in southeast Asia and handed them the maximum penalty of seven years in prison.

The court in eastern Colmar also ordered 71-year-old Robert Chung and 51-year-old Jean-Marc Malgarini to pay fines of euro70,000 (US$89,500)and euro50,000 (US$63,930), respectively.

Prosecutors argued in the trial that the two men together had victimized about 50 girls aged around 10 years old in Thailand and Cambodia.

The two were convicted Wednesday on charges of soliciting, accepting and carrying out sexual acts with minors aged younger than age 15.

The two men were arrested in 2007 based on an investigation by Europol, the European police agency.
