BANGKOK – Foreign tourists’ visa exemption earlier approved by the Thai cabinet has been effective from March 5 to June 4, according to Tharit Charungvat, Director-General of the Department of Information of Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Thai cabinet approved on Jan. 20 the tourist visa exemption for all foreign nationals for three months to boost the country’s tourism industry as parts of the government’s economic stimulus packages, the Thai News Agency reported.

The government has hoped that revenues from the tourism industry will help offset the sharp falling revenues on the country ‘s exports, which have been hit by the rising global economic turmoil.

Prior to the global economic slump, for years the revenues from the tourism and export sector had largely contributed to the country’s economic growth.
