Delhi Metro’s longest line, Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar, is set to open in April 2018. The revised schedule was updated by Delhi Metro based on ground reports. The schedule for other lines remains the same.
In the meantime, the section from Majlis Park to Lajpat Nagar would be completed by September, although commissioning of the 59 km-long line 7 would take longer.
Line 8, the other new corridor from Janakpuri (West) to Kalindi Kunj, would open in sections starting from May of this year. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesperson, Anuj Dayal said the sections that would be opened include Kalindi Kunj to Kalkaji, Janakpuri (West) to IGI domestic terminal and Kalkaji to the domestic terminal.
Dayal said, “The work is expected to be completed on the Kalindi Kunj to Kalkaji section next month, which will be followed by clearances, including the safety audit.
The latest project status report on line 7 says that around 91% of civil works on the line is complete as of March. For line 8, the progress of civil works till March stands at 91.37%.
The ITO-Kashmere Gate section is slated to be completed soon, while the Mundka-Bahadurgarh and Dwarka-Najafgarh lines will be completed by December.
While construction as well as train and signaling trials on the ITO-Kashmere Gate section have been completed, the line is yet to become operational as it awaits safety audit by the commissioner metro rail safety (CMRS).
Line 7 would touch portions of inner Ring Road and cut travel time between eastern and southern flanks of the national capital. It would connect northwest Delhi’s Mukundpur to northeast Delhi’s Shiv Vihar cutting across various south Delhi areas, including Sarojini Nagar, INA, South Extension and densely populated parts of east Delhi, such as Mayur Vihar-I, Vinod Nagar and Karkardooma.
In the phase-III expansion, a total of 140 km of Metro network would be added to the current coverage of 213 km and cost around Rs 40,000 crore.
