The earthquake was record at 1:22 pm in the New Ireland area, east of Rabaul.


It would have been felt by people up to 757 kilometres away and would have caused damage of up to 60 kilometres away, according to Geoscience Australia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there is not threat of a tsunami.
