NEW YORK, NY – Victoria Cruises recently hosted a press conference and lunch reception honoring a delegation of government, tourism, and business leaders here to promote tourism to the Yangtze River’s Three Gorges region of the Chongqing municipality, the largest of four provincial Chinese regions under the control of the central government.

In addition to a magnificent natural landscape and countless cultural and architectural draws, Chongqing’s crucial role in China tourism stems from its function as a major port city for the Yangtze River and its close proximity to the now completed Three Gorges Dam project, an innovative feat of engineering which has successfully raised the Yangtze’s water level, thereby improving Victoria’s river cruise program.

Victoria Cruises president James Pi noted Chongqing’s emergence as a major tourism player, introducing Vice Mayor Mr. Tan Xiwei who unveiled plans to further develop global awareness for Chongqing through major marketing initiatives in conjunction with the China National Tourist Office.

“More than 70 flight routes have been opened linking Chongqing with over 50 cities in China and other parts of the world,” said Vice Mayor Tan Xiwei, noting that, “The Three Gorges are still there and even more charming and imposing, with new scenic spots having emerged after the reservoir was formed.”

“The night view of our mountainous city is well known around the world with rows upon rows of modern skyscrapers protruding like colorful crystals and winding boulevards like waving multicolored streamers,” added the Vice Mayor.

Highlights of the Chongqing experience include the Chongqing Zoo, home to some of China’s largest and most impressive pandas; the Dazu Stone Carvings, dating back to the seventh century; Chongqing’s Great Hall of the People and People’s Square; the location of US Forces’ headquarters in China during World War II; as well as Victoria Cruises’ excursions.
