The earthquake, at 20:51 UTC on Friday, was centered 159 kilometers (99 miles) west-southwest of Makurazaki, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake.

Moderate to strong shaking was felt throughout southern Japan.
