Ladies Trekkers, a newly-established philanthropic and humanitarian charity organization in Tanzania, has organized a trekking trip on Mount Kilimanjaro aiming to support children from poor families neighboring the mountain.

Launched by philanthropist Janika Vaikjarv, Ladies Trekking Club and Impatiens Kilimanjari Foundation, a non-profit organization, is supporting poor children through donations from Mount Kilimanjaro climbers and travel book sales.

The 2016 Mount Kilimanjaro trekking trip is scheduled for February 23 through the northern Rongai route and will attract hikers from Estonia, Sweden, Hungary, Austria, and England.

Janika said in her message this week that the trekking trip on Mount Kilimanjaro will be a charity event to support girls from poor Maasai communities living on the slopes of this highest peak in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro.

Ladies Trekking Club has cooperated with Kapolondo Expeditions to organize and sponsor the February trekking trip. Kapolondo Expeditions has been founded by Tony Kapolondo and operated by Ene Lepp, Tanzanian, and Danish citizens who have been operating and organizing tourism business for the past 12 years, Janika added.

“We hope that the considerably lower price of 1,495 euros (US$1,795) and the selection of the Rongai route will allow us to focus more on charity and find additional support for the Maasai girls’ education,” she said in her message to eTN.

“Everyone is welcome to join us, and we are looking different nationalities to Kilimanjaro as Flag Ambassadors,” she said.

In March of last year, the Ladies Trekkers Club members, mostly women from all corners of the world, convened at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro during their mission to conquer this highest point in Africa, while carrying a flag bearing a message of “Everyone has the right to education.”

The club had joined hands with Tanzanian tourist companies in organizing Mount Kilimanjaro charity climbing expeditions every year, aimed to raise funds for Maasai girls to meet schooling requirements including tuition fees, boarding and medical, incidental allowance, transport, and uniform expenses.

Surrounded by poor Maasai pastoral communities in its western corridor, Mount Kilimanjaro is the leading tourist attraction in Tanzania.
