PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea – The sky over Port Moresby was illuminated by a colourful array of fireworks as the country offered the most spectacular opening ceremony in the history of the Pacific Games.
Some 4000 athletes and officials, from across the region, including, for the first time, Australia and New Zealand, were enchanted by the truly magnificent diversity of colours and sounds emulating PNGโs rich culture.
His Royal Highness, The Duke of York, who represented H.M. The Queen, delivered the opening speech and commented that it was definitely amongst the most impressive opening ceremonies he had ever seen.
The country now getโs ready for yet another celebration when it achieves 40 years of independence on September 15th. Looking to the future, Papua New Guinea intends to continue itโs successful policy of combining improved tourism with diverse topography and ancient cultures.
Expansion comes naturally. To better address the influx of visitors, as host nation for The Pacific Games, Port Moresby, the capital, raised itโs hotel room count from 600 to 6000.
