LONDON – Gideon Multimedia, the mobile application specialist, has launched a free travel guide for mobile phones, mobiEXPLORE UK.

LONDON – Gideon Multimedia, the mobile application specialist, has launched a free travel guide for mobile phones, mobiEXPLORE UK. The application provides offline maps, local information, useful hints and tips, and search listings for restaurants, hotels, and much more – all free of charge. The application covers over 100 destinations across the country and was downloaded over 70,000 times in its first three weeks, making it one of the most popular mobile downloads in the UK.

The application offers a new way for the travel industry to reach potential customers and increase revenue streams. MobiEXPLORE is a highly-flexible application that can be purchased and re-branded by companies. From hotel chains wanting to add value to their customer experience to airlines looking to support their in flight magazine, the application’s versatility means companies have a new and innovative way of engaging with their customer base. With the application proving a big hit with tourists from the UK (17 percent*), Europe (16 percent*) and the rest of the world (63 percent*), the branded application is ideal for highly-targeted promotion of UK facilities and attractions.

Vedran Prazen, European MD of Gideon Multimedia, urges UK companies to embrace mobile in the quest to reach new customers: “The current economic climate means businesses have to be sure of return on investment. By using a customized edition of mobiEXPLORE UK, a tourist board, for example, has a highly-targeted platform for promoting local places of interest, events, hotels, and restaurants – not to mention real time news and special offers that can be updated regularly. When you consider the budgets invested in printed guidebooks, adverts and brochures, the direct nature and extreme flexibility of this application makes it a really wise investment. The application can even be used to generate additional revenue through advertising and/or sponsorship.”

The MobiEXPLORE application is easy to download via a computer or SMS request, and unlike guide books that date as soon as the ink hits the page, the application can be easily updated. The application can also be used to go online for up-to-the-minute weather forecasts, news, special offers, promotions, and discounts.

Simple to use and easy to navigate, the mobiEXPLORE application has won a number of accolades in recognition of its innovative design, including the most recent achievement of honorable mention at Adobe MAX 2008. The UK launch is the first in a 10 country roll out, with applications for Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Greece, Hungary, Portugal, and Holland being launched by June 2009.
