Four tourists are feared dead after a Kenyan registered light aircraft crashed at the peak of Mt Kilimanjaro.

The Cessna 206 aircraft took off at the Kyulu hills shortly after midday with five people on board, four tourists and a pilot.

The fate of the tourists was not immediately clear but reports indicated that the Kenyan pilot survived after he was pulled out of the wreckage alive.

Other reports indicated that all the four tourists had been killed.

The tourists were on a sightseeing tour of Mt Kilimanjaro when the aircraft crashed.

Mt Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and is at the Kenya-Tanzania border.

A senior official from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority told The Standard on Sunday the ill-fated aircraft was registered in Kenya and took off from the Kenyan side of the mountain.

He said there are many touristsโ€™ camps at Kyulu Hills and the nationalities of the tourists were not yet known.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known since investigations were being handled by Tanzanian authorities.

An accident investigator who confirmed the accident, said they were waiting for communication from their Tanzanian counterparts.
