The 27th joint meeting of the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific & the UNWTO Commission for South Asia opened today at the beautiful Bandos Resort in the Maldives.

According to UNWTO this was the best attendance ever for this joint meeting.

The welcome address was given by the host H.E. Ahmed Adeeb Abdyl Gafoor,the Minister of Tourism for the Maldives.

The event went co-inside with the launch of the Visit Maldives Year 2016 Campaign. The president of the Country himself demonstrated the importance of tourism to his nation and launched the campaign today during the opening ceremony of the UNWTO conference.

The president also gave the inaugural address again confirming his commitment to the travel and tourism industry.

The keynote speech was given by the UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai. His speech was on UNWTO’s advocacy initiative on positioning tourism in the global agenda.

During today’s event special focus was given to the situation in Nepal. The minister from Nepal gave a not so positive outlook of the tourism situation in his country but was overwhelmed with thanks to the support received.
