CANCUN, Mexico – Costa Maya, Mexico’s fastest-growing, cruise port and destination re-opened its shores today with the arrival of Holland America Cruises’ Westerdam, the first ship to dock at Costa Maya since its closure in 2007 due to damages from Hurricane Dean. In celebration of the Port’s highly-anticipated reopening, president of the Port of Costa Maya, Teofilo Hamui, was on hand to personally greet Captain Peter Harris and welcome returning passengers.
“We are delighted to see cruise passengers visit our shores once again,” said Hamui. “The patience and support we received from our cruise industry partners and previous visitors during our fast recovery is much appreciated. We welcome everyone back to an enhanced Costa Maya.”
The port reopened with several improvements to its infrastructure and the neighboring fishing village of Mahahual. Costa Maya’s new berthing station makes it one of only 4 ports worldwide with the capability to accommodate the next generation of cruise ships such as F3 and Genesis-class types.
Returning cruise passengers and first-time visitors to Costa Maya will enjoy the area’s rich history and culture, lush tropical jungles, unspoiled beaches, and outstanding dive sites. Guests are also invited to experience new excursions such as BioMaya Bacalar, a unique zip-lining adventure through the Mayan jungle.
Port officials are glad to share the excitement of returning guests with their neighbors. Costa Maya plays an important role in the sustainability of the surrounding areas, including Mahahual. It is expected that the area’s population will increase by 212 percent following the port’s reopening. The port will continue to observe responsible developmental, as well as economic and social growth guidelines to ensure sustainable growth of the region. New and returning visitors also will enjoy two new landmarks – a beachside boardwalk and lighthouse, which adds to the charm of the fishing village of Mahahual, a favorite spot amongst cruise-ship passengers.
